Coming of Age 2

Rapaport (Joel Rapaport) is a 25-year old rapper/producer/guitarist from Inner West Sydney. Regarded as Sydney's most neurotic MC, Rapaport crafts witty, heartfelt lyrics with hard-hitting soulful beats. His lyrics reveal a frailty rarely seen in the macho world of hip hop.

Rapaport tackled the battle stereotype head on when he won the 2006 Scribble Jam NSW mc battle, and then came runner up in 2006 Scribble Jam Australian Final, surprising opponents with his humble demeanor and killer punchlines. Rapaport's journey in this competition is the subject of the documentary Aussie Battlers funded by JTV, and scheduled for screening on ABC television in 2008.

Rapaport has a degree in Contemporary Music from the University of Western Sydney, and fronts the costume-wearing, live hip hop band 'The Phonies' (Keepin’ it Fake EP due 2008). He also plays guitar in Afro-funk band 'Usutu' and funk/latin band 'Mamacita'.

Since the beginning of 2007 Rapaport has focused on writing and producing his debut EP Laughing on the Inside. Using a combination of samples and live instruments, the songs range from banging soul sing-alongs, to bone-crushing synth anthems.

Laughing on the Inside, a collection of ten diverse and uncompromising tracks that range from dark, heavy grime to soulful sing-a-long hooks, with a splash of 90s synth pop.

This eclectic album is held together by Rapaport’s easy flow and idiosyncratic brand of witty lyricism, with support from charismatic rapper P Smurf and his sister, soul singer Billie Rose. Laughing on the Inside features original beats produced by Rapaport, Chris Irvine (Suburban Dark, The Phonies) and dubstep duo Claws and Fangs, and is sure to bring on a wry smile while pushing the ever-expanding boundaries of Australian hip hop.
