Rapaport Releases Video for nostalgic Big Village Records restrospective ‘Sandcastles’

Sydney rapper Joel Rapaport releases the nostalgic music video for ‘Sandcastles’ a song about the rise and fall of the independent label he formed with 12 other Sydney hip hop artists in in 2010. The Video was directed by film maker Maia Dal Berger and captures Rapaport playing the song to various members of the founding crew members interspersed with video from the record label between 2010 – 2018.

The song and video are a love letter to youth, art & friendship and is a big high five to the amazing artists that founded and helped build the label out of a Surry Hill warehouse as well as the community that grew around it in Sydney and around Australia.

Founded in 2010, Big Village has released 19 albums and 6 EPs, been nominated for an Fbi SMAC award, has had three albums nominated for Australian Music Prize and launched the careers of artists such as Tuka, Daily Meds, True Vibenation, Suburban Dark, Omar Musa and Mathas. The label ran as a collective from 2010 – 2017 and is now owned and managed by Joel Rapaport.

‘Sandcastles’ was released on the self produced album Roadkill in July 2024, an eclectic but assured zigzag through folky rap, grime storytelling and jazz laced boom bap. Rapaport’s third solo album is a collection of nine discrete songs that are punchy, poignant, sardonic and unashamedly sentimental as they venture through territory of relationships, friendships, bad housemates, politics, mental health, and sexual assault.

The album also features the delicate piano love poem ‘The Gardener’ which was released in January 2024. This release follows on from the Dodo EP which was released in 2022 which featured songs ‘Dodo’ and ‘Ugly Mug’.

Rapaport performed and recorded all raps, guitars, keys and bass, and handled all drum programming and production. The album was mixed by and received some additional production by Louis Isaac (aka Kid Fiction).

BIO

Rapper, guitarist, producer, Rapaport (He / Him) articulates personal thought bubbles, survival mantras and opaque moments through a sound influenced by grime, art rap, jazz and soul. Dense lyrics, dry humour, electric guitars dripped in reverb and a slapping drum break are most of his favourite things.

For 20 years Rapaport has been leaving an indelible mark on Australian grime & hip hop as co-founder and owner of Big Village Records, creator of Sketch the Rhyme, and member of groups Loose Change and The Phonies.

As a solo artist Rapaport has released two albums Laughing on the Inside (2009), and Village Idiot (2018) and two EPs Patterns (2012) and Dodo (2022). He was nominated for Best Song at FBi Radio SMAC Awards in 2017 for ‘What I Got’ and was a Winner of the Triple J Unearthed NIDA competition for Loose Change’s ‘Grown Up’ Ft. Jeswon (Thundamentals) in 2013, featured in the celebrated “Fully Gassed” grime cypher 2018 (850,000 views on YouTube) and ABC documentary “Aussie Battlers” in 2007.

Rapaport is currently studying Jazz guitar at Sydney Conservatorium.

“You know when it's new Rapaport that it's gonna be a locked down bars fest. Dude got the track buzzing here. Four Stars” - Dodo Single Review, Dave Ruby Howe – Triple J Unearthed, May 2021

“A+ storytelling on silken production.” - Steph Hughes Triple J Unearthed, 2/2/2018

“…the musicianship, dynamics, rhythms and sheer multi-tasking ability of the Rapaport duo was staggering…an intimate and fascinating set for music lovers and musicians alike. Rapaport and his astounding drummer Finn were unparalleled in their tightness.” - The Haze Mag, April 2018

“A rapid-fire tongue and some great messages … country twang in the riff, two-step beats and rap? I don’t really believe my ears or eyes.” - Scene Str, 16/4/2018

“Rapaport’s unassuming stature didn’t prepare the audience for the onslaught of fire and ferocity of his rhymes.” - Gigamov, 14/4/2017

“Rapaport of Big Village doth return with a grimey new single, FAM, … Rapaport nailing his signature flow and sharp-as-a-tack lyrics.” - Pile Rats, April 2018

“Rapaport’s lyricism is kept tidy and smart, sticking to simple repeated phrases and plays on words... What I Got employs diverse instrumentation including sporadic guitars and vintage-style sampling in a way that brings to mind the musical and vocal stylings of RATBOY.”
